9. Ear, nose and throat

Origin of infection	Oral treatment
Dental Infections	Amoxicillin 250-500mg tds or In penicillin allergy - Erymax 500mg bd plus Metronidazole 400mg tds for anaerobic infections in those patients not responding to treatment. Treat for 5 - 7 days.
Sinusitis	Amoxicillin 250 - 500mg tds or Doxycycline 200mg stat, then 100mg od or In penicillin allergy - Erymax 500mg BD Treat for 7 days Chronic infections may require up to 14 days treatment.
Oral Candidiasis	Nystatin suspension 1ml qds or Nystatin pastille one sucked qds or Fluconazole 50mg daily if severe Treat for 7 days or continue for 48 hours after lesions have healed
Otitis Media	Amoxicillin 250-500mg tds or Erymax 500mg bd
Tonsillitis	Penicillin V 500mg qds increased to 750mg qds in severe infections or In penicillin allergy - Erymax 500mg bd. May require IV benzylpenicillin initially. Most infections are viral where antibiotics are ineffective.

Quinsy & allied syndromes	IV co-amoxiclav 1.2g tds + metronidazole 500mg tds
