Septic
arthritis & Osteomyelitis
Consult microbiologist at earliest opportunity, particularly if there
is history of foreign travel, associated GU infection, presence of
prosthetic joint or metalwork or pre-existing joint pathology.
IV Flucloxacillin 2g every 6
hours
plus
Oral Ciprofloxacin 500mg - 750mg
every 12 hours
If Penicillin allergic -
IV Clindamycin 450mg every 6
hours
plus
Oral Ciprofloxacin 500mg - 750mg
every 12 hours
Prolonged treatment is necessary. Usual treatment length is 4 - 6 weeks.
Modify antibiotic therapy based on culture results in consultation with microbiologist. Please discus with Microbiology the duration of antibiotic therapy and possibility of switch from IV to oral therapy.
