Treatment of hirsutism
Dianette (cyproterone and ethinyloestradiol) is the only product with a licence for hirsutism. It is often ineffective and alternative agents, often without a licence for this indication, are chosen. Spironolactone (25 - 100mg BD), cyproterone (25 - 100mg OD cyclically), ketoconazole (up to 400mg daily) and finasteride (5mg OD) are all prescribed for this indication. Response to treatment often takes at least 6 months.
