There is no convincing evidence that the risk of major gastroentestinal bleeding is reduced by using enteric-coated preparations of aspirin at the low doses used for prophylaxis (75mg EC aspirin is several times the cost of soluble tablets.)

Co-proxamol is being withdrawn altogether due to the serious complications associated with overdoses of this preparation. Patients should not be initiated on co-proxamol and patients already receiving it should be switched to another analgesic. (See CSM guidance October 2004)

Zomorph capsules have the
advantage of flexible administration.
They may be:
Swallowed whole with a sip of water like ordinary tablets or capsules.
Opened and the contents sprinkled onto and taken with a spoonful of semi-solid food such as yoghurt, jam or fruit puree when swallowing solid preparations may be difficult or unpleasant but oral ingestion is still possible. N.B. the patient should not chew the food as this may damage the microspheres and stop the "modified-release" effect. It could also potentially cause increased side effects.
Opened and the contents administered via a gastric feeding line when even semi solid dose forms cannot be tolerated. Detailed instructions are available from Pharmacy.
The method of administration can be tailored to the patient's degree
of swallowing difficulty with each dose, thereby potentially allowing
the patient to remain on the same oral product for as long as possible.
