Pharmacy staff both provide and
undertake a wide variety of formal and informal
education and training programs for the
following:
Undergraduate
pharmacy students
The
pharmacy department has been linked with the
School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
for many years and contributes to many aspects
to undergraduate teaching. A number of staff
hold joint appointments with the University.
Under the
guidance of the Clinical Tutor, 80 students
attend the Trust on a fortnightly basis
throughout their 3rd and 4th
years. The aim of the course is to provide
students with practical experience in the basic
principles of common disease processes together
with the principles of rational drug therapy.
Additional aims include promoting an
understanding of the role of the pharmacists in
secondary care and the provision of an
environment in which students are encouraged to
make informed choices about their careers.
Following an
introductory module, students follow taught
lecture material at the University with
practical case based tutorials in the hospitals.
A typical example would include a relevant case
study, a patient interview and review. Students
are formally assessed at the end of each module.
Other members of
the department also contribute to formal
lectures at the University on other modules of
the undergraduate course.
Northwest
Summer School for Pharmacy Undergraduates
The Pharmacy
Department supports the North West Region Summer
School for Pharmacy Undergraduates by providing
four summer school placements during which
students gain experience of hospital pharmacy
and work towards developing their pharmaceutical
care and clinical skills.
Pre-registration
pharmacists
The Pharmacy
Department provides competency-based structured
training for pharmacy graduates in accordance
with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great
Britain’s Pre-registration Training Programme.
Placements for four students are available each
year. The in-house training programme is
supported by tutorials and a Regional Programme
of Study Days
Information
about the pre-registration year and how to apply
for places is available through the
pre-registration tutor.
Postgraduate
pharmacy students
All
junior pharmacists at South Manchester
University Hospitals undertake either a
part-time postgraduate Diploma in Clinical and
Health Services Pharmacy at Manchester
University or a distance-learning postgraduate
Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy from Belfast
University.
Following a diploma, the pharmacists can then go
on to undertake a variety of other relevant
qualifications. Additional qualifications held
by many of the current staff include other
postgraduate and advanced diplomas, Masters
Degree, PhD, Membership of the College of
Pharmacy practice and a variety of management
qualifications.
Student
Technician Training
NVQ Level

The
department supports on average 6 student
technician places some of which are partly
funded by Greater Manchester Strategic Health
Authority.
Students are
placed on a structured programme, which involves
working in Aseptics, Procurement, Ward Services
and the Dispensary.
City College
Manchester delivers the underpinning knowledge
for the NVQ. Students study for 2 years on a day
release basis and achieve a BTEC in Applied
Sciences (Pharmaceutical).
